Hakone private tour review
My verdict: a genuinely good private day, sold in a way that will catch people out. It starts in Hakone. The guide meets you at your hotel here and you travel together on public transport, and getting to Hakone from Tokyo and back again is explicitly not included. If you are staying the night, this is the most flexible product on the site and the reviews back that up warmly, particularly from people travelling at a slower pace. If you are coming out of Tokyo for the day, read the exclusion twice before you book. It is also priced per person, not per group.
The thing to understand before anything else
This is the only product on this site that is not a day trip from Tokyo. The operator is clear about it: travel to and from Tokyo is not included. Your guide meets you at your hotel, which is assumed to be in Hakone, and the two of you move around by public transport for eight hours.
That is a perfectly sensible way to sell a private guide. It just means the ¥38,499 is not the whole cost of your day if you are starting in Shinjuku. Add the journey in both directions on top: a seated direct train is ¥2,470 each way and takes 75 to 90 minutes, and every other route is priced on Tokyo to Hakone. Whether to stay over instead is worked through on day trip or stay overnight.

That last clause is worth reading with the Freepass in mind. If you already hold one, a good part of the day’s transport and several admissions are already dealt with, and the guide is buying you knowledge and pace rather than tickets.

Luz and Teina between them describe the two things a private guide genuinely buys you here: a pace that suits the slowest person in your party, and a start early enough to be ahead of the coaches. Neither is available on a fixed coach schedule at any price.
Public transport means walking between stops. Individual stops in Hakone are walkable and the loop itself is not; the difference is set out on is Hakone walkable. If mobility is a factor, say so when you book, as Luz clearly did.

Who should book it
Book it if you are already staying in Hakone, if someone in your party needs the day to move at their speed, or if you want the Open-Air Museum and Cedar Avenue rather than the standard circuit. Nothing else here bends to you like this.
Do not book it as a day out of Tokyo without pricing the trains on top, and do not book it if a fixed itinerary would have done. Riding the same ground yourself on the loop costs a fraction of it.
