Is Hakone walkable?
Where you walk
At Owakudani, on the marked paths through a live geothermal valley with sulphur vents. At Motohakone, around to the vermilion torii of Hakone Shrine standing in Lake Ashi. Around Gora. These are proper walks in mountain air and you will want shoes rather than sandals, but none of them is an expedition.
Where you ride, and why
Hakone-Yumoto to Gora is about 35 minutes of switchback railway climbing the valley. Gora to Sounzan is the cable car. Sounzan to Togendai is the ropeway over the vents. Togendai to Motohakone is the boat. Then a bus back down. Each leg exists because the terrain does not let you shortcut it, and the order they run in is on the loop page.
Two honest warnings
The connections between stations are not always as short as the map suggests. Marcus, who bought the ropeway e-ticket, rated the ride highly and then added: “Getting to the rope line was a bit of a hassle.” Another buyer, ARTURO, wanted the listing to say more about “how windy and call it can be at the top. And ways to get to the Ropeway” — his words, and both halves of that are fair. The top of the ropeway is exposed and colder than the valley floor, and the ropeway itself suspends in high wind, so a walking plan that depends on it is a plan with a hole in it. Fares, stations and seasonal hours are on the ropeway page.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has Hakone at volcanic alert Level 1, “exercise normal caution”, as of August 2026. No warning, no entry restriction. Owakudani has been restricted temporarily in the past, so check status on the day and stay on the marked paths rather than assuming.
Frequently asked questions
Can you walk around Hakone without transport?
Not sensibly. The loop’s stops sit at the ends of a railway, a cable car, a ropeway and a boat crossing, and the legs between them are mountain distances. Buy the transport, then walk at the stops.
How much walking is there on a Hakone day trip?
A moderate amount, in bursts: the paths at Owakudani, the lakeside at Motohakone and the walk to the torii, plus station transfers that are longer than they look. Comfortable shoes matter more than fitness. How the day fits together against the 16:45 last ropeway car is on is one day enough for Hakone.
Is Owakudani safe to walk around?
It is a live geothermal valley with sulphur vents, and it sits at volcanic alert Level 1, "exercise normal caution", as of August 2026, with no eruption warning and no entry restriction. Stay on the marked paths, and check the day’s status before you go up, because temporary restrictions have happened before.
